F10 Athlete - Simon Yearsley
Athlete Profile: Simon Yearsley
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I started climbing at the age of 15 after many years fell-walking and back-packing with my parents. I was fortunate enough to grow up on the edge of the Lake District where these early rock-climbing exploits fuelled my love for being amongst mountains. My real passion is exploratory climbing, often in remote or off the beaten track locations. This has included new routes in the Himalaya, Alaska, European Alps and on the incomparable Scottish winter cliffs. On this Scottish stage, I’m particularly proud of the first ascents (with Malcolm Bass) of Realisation (VI,6), Wonderland (VII,7) and Haigha (VI,7), a triptych of 300m+ new winter lines on the remote cliffs of BeinnBhann; and the development of Eilde Canyon, a major new ice climbing venue in Glencoe.
I train hard(ish). I particularly enjoy the challenge of reflecting on the climbs I do, reviewing how and why things went well (or not so well), and finding new ways to perform more effectively in the mountains.
When I’m not climbing I run our own business, Big Tree Campervans, which is a campervan rental company based in our home of Perthshire. I’m married to Sarah who pursuing her own professional career in the Visual Arts & Galleries sector, and has always done a fantastic job of supporting my climbing life as well as. Our two children do a great job of putting up with their dad’s passion for climbing. I guess I’m most proud of being just over 50 and still managing to get a good balance of being the best alpinist, best father and best husband that I can be... although not always in that order.
Your best Adventure to date:
The Spring 2014 attempt on Janahut (6805m) with Malcolm. Ok, we didn’t summit, but did reach a stunning highpoint of 6665m after 7 days of effort since leaving Base Camp. The expedition was, for me, characterised by: smooth and fun travel through northern India; great support from our BC team; superb alpine style fast movement over technical ground at altitude; spending time in the mountains with a great friend.
A large glass of Ardbeg (the best Scottish malt in the world) with just a tiny drop of water.... sitting in front of my fire and panning the next adventure.
Favourite F10 product:
The brilliantly flexible Trek Tarp – from family camping to alpine style Himalayan pushes... it works everywhere!
